Clinical Microbiologist

Bioscint Engineering Ltd is a Maltese medical engineering company established in 2014, specialising in the supply, installation, servicing and application support of medical devices — with a growing focus on infection-prevention technologies, endoscope reprocessing systems and clinical-microbiology monitoring solutions across the Maltese healthcare market.

We are presently looking to recruit a Clinical Microbiologist to join our research and development project team on a part-time, fixed-term basis (approx for 12hrs per month from Janaury 2027 to April 2028), and to lead the microbiological work programme of one of our internal research projects. As a member of our team, your responsibilities would include:

· Advising on the design of the microbiological work programme, including comparator methods (heterotrophic plate count / aerobic CFU per ISO EN 15883-4), Pseudomonas aeruginosa detection, and reference-strain spike-recovery experiments.

· Reviewing and approving the microbiological protocols and standard operating procedures authored by the Bioscint R&D team.

· Overseeing selection and handling of ATCC reference strains and providing technical guidance on culture conditions, quality-control organisms and neutraliser selection.

· Interpreting microbiological results generated by the project team and by the subcontracted reference laboratory, and providing clinical-microbiology sign-off on the microbiological findings included in the project deliverables.

· Contributing microbiological expertise to the derivation and clinical interpretation of the ATP action-level thresholds proposed under the project.

· Reviewing interim and final technical reports of the project from a clinical-microbiology standpoint prior to submission to the funding body.

· Contributing, where appropriate, to the dissemination outputs of the project (co-authorship of conference posters and peer-reviewed publications).

The ideal candidate should meet the following requirements:

· Be a qualified Clinical Microbiologist, holding a recognised postgraduate qualification in clinical or medical microbiology, or a closely related discipline.

· Have current or recent experience in a hospital or reference-laboratory clinical-microbiology setting.

· Have familiarity with water-quality microbiology, endoscope reprocessing standards, or infection-prevention monitoring in a healthcare setting (strongly desirable).

· If a working knowledge of ISO EN 15883 (endoscope washer-disinfector standards), or of relevant national or international guidelines on endoscope reprocessing is present – this will be considered an asset

· Be comfortable operating in a defined-term part-time role alongside any existing clinical commitments.

· Have excellent written English and the ability to review and contribute to technical protocols and reports to publication-quality standards.

· Have the right to live and work in Malta.
