Role Overview \nThe Senior Database Engineer will take a strategic lead in managing the Company’s database ecosystem, ensuring optimal performance, security, and resilience. This role involves overseeing database operations, mentoring junior staff, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and driving initiatives that enhance database architecture, scalability, and compliance in a high-stakes financial environment.

Key Responsibilities

Database Strategy & Leadership: Lead the planning, deployment, and optimisation of database systems, ensuring alignment with organisational goals and IT strategy.
\n\t
Team Mentorship: Guide and mentor junior database administrators, fostering skill development and knowledge sharing.
\n\t
Backup, Recovery & Continuity: Oversee advanced backup and disaster recovery strategies to ensure data resilience and business continuity.
\n\t
Performance Optimisation: Drive initiatives to improve database performance, including query optimisation, indexing strategies, and system tuning across multiple environments.
\n\t
Security & Compliance Oversight: Establish and enforce robust database security frameworks, ensuring adherence to GDPR, DORA, and other regulatory standards.
\n\t
Infrastructure Upgrades & Migrations: Plan and execute complex database upgrades, migrations, and high-availability configurations with minimal disruption.
\n\t
Collaboration & Advisory: Work closely with IT infrastructure, development teams, and business units to provide expert guidance on database design, architecture, and integration.
\n\t
Documentation & Governance: Maintain comprehensive documentation, enforce database governance policies, and implement audit procedures for operational excellence.

Incident & Problem Management: Lead the resolution of complex database incidents, identifying root causes, and implementing preventive measures.
\n\t
Shift Flexibility: Demonstrate readiness to operate within a 24/7 shift roster as required by the business.

Qualifications, Skills, and Attributes
\n\n
\n\t
Education: MQF Level 6 Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field. Postgraduate qualifications or specialised certifications are advantageous.
\n\t
Experience: Minimum of 5–7 years in enterprise IT environments, with proven experience in senior database administration, cloud database management, and financial services.
\n\t
Language Skills: Excellent command of English is required. Maltese language skills would be advantageous.
\n\t
Communication Skills: Ability to articulate technical strategies to senior management and non-technical stakeholders.
\n\t
Interpersonal Skills: Strong leadership and collaboration skills with experience managing and developing high-performing teams.
\n\t
Technical Skills: Expertise in relational and NoSQL databases, cloud database solutions, performance tuning, replication, clustering, high-availability systems, scripting, and monitoring tools.
\n\t
Organisation: Capable of prioritising multiple strategic projects and operational responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
\n\t
Self-Motivated: Highly proactive with the ability to make informed decisions and take ownership of initiatives.

Problem-Solving: Advanced analytical skills for complex database issues, risk mitigation, and optimisation strategies.
