Role Overview
The Assistant Tax Manager will join the Company’s tax function and support the delivery of compliance and advisory assignments for a varied portfolio of Maltese and overseas clients. Acting as an important point of coordination between senior leaders and junior team members, the successful candidate will review technical work, guide colleagues, contribute to complex engagements and help maintain high standards of client service. The position may be undertaken on a full-time or reduced-hours basis.
Key Responsibilities
- Tax Compliance Review: Examine company and individual income tax filings, supporting calculations, statutory schedules and related documentation completed by less experienced colleagues.
- VAT Oversight: Check VAT submissions and assessments for accuracy while assisting clients with the interpretation and resolution of technical VAT matters.
- Team Guidance: Supervise junior colleagues across tax and VAT assignments, provide practical direction and monitor the standard and timely completion of their work.
- Technical Advisory: Research and deliver clear guidance on domestic and cross-border taxation issues, including the preparation of detailed written opinions where required.
- Complex Calculations: Handle advanced tax computations involving areas such as Malta’s notional interest deduction framework and fiscal unity provisions.
- Transaction Support: Contribute tax input to proposed transactions, changes in corporate structures and wider group reorganisation projects.
- Regulatory Awareness: Monitor developments affecting taxation in Malta and other jurisdictions, assess their relevance and communicate potential consequences to clients.
- Learning and Development: Support internal knowledge-sharing, coaching and professional development activities across the department.
- Client Relationships: Develop trusted professional relationships by understanding client requirements, responding effectively and maintaining a consistently high standard of service.
- Assignment Management: Organise competing priorities and coordinate deliverables to ensure that regulatory and client deadlines are respected.
- Education: A recognised accountancy qualification obtained through the University of Malta, ACCA or an equivalent professional route is required.
- Experience: Applicants should possess between 4 and 6 years of relevant experience within the taxation function of a corporate services provider, including responsibility for checking tax returns and calculations prepared by others.
- Tax Knowledge: A thorough working understanding of Malta’s income tax framework, compliance obligations and related technical principles is essential.
- Language Skills: Full professional proficiency in spoken and written English and Maltese is required for this position.
- Communication Skills: The ability to explain detailed taxation matters clearly and adapt communication to clients, colleagues and senior stakeholders is important.
- Interpersonal Skills: A cooperative and approachable manner, together with the confidence to support colleagues and establish productive client relationships, is required.
- Technical Skills: Strong competence in Microsoft Office and the ability to work confidently with the software needed for tax compliance and advisory assignments are essential.
- Organisation: The successful candidate must be able to plan workloads carefully, balance several assignments and produce accurate work within demanding timeframes.
- Self-Motivated: A proactive outlook, a constructive attitude and the ability to work effectively with limited supervision are expected.
- Problem-Solving: Applicants should be capable of analysing complex taxation questions, identifying practical solutions and exercising sound professional judgement.
- Teamwork: The role requires someone who can work independently when necessary while also contributing positively within a collaborative departmental structure.
- Attention to Detail: A precise and methodical approach is essential when checking calculations, filings and technical documentation.
- Eligibility: Applications are open to EU nationals and third-country nationals who meet the essential criteria. Third-country nationals must also demonstrate strong and established connections to Malta.

- Employment Terms: An indefinite employment agreement is offered on either a full-time basis or a reduced schedule of no fewer than 30 hours per week.
