Role Overview
The Operations Manager will provide senior leadership across the Company’s operational function, ensuring that services are delivered safely, efficiently and commercially. The position will also play an important part in preparing for a new treatment facility, strengthening operational systems and supporting the Business as it expands its capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Operational Leadership: Direct the daily activities of the operational function, ensuring that assignments are completed effectively and that resources are deployed according to business priorities.
- Project Delivery: Partner with the Project Manager to coordinate operational projects, keeping expenditure, milestones and agreed completion dates under close review.
- Cross-Functional Coordination: Work alongside the commercial and compliance teams to address customer requirements, explore potential services and maintain conformity with contractual, procedural and legal obligations.
- Work Planning: Prepare tailored operating plans, safe systems of work and risk-control documentation for individual assignments.
- Workforce Deployment: Schedule personnel effectively to improve productivity, maintain service continuity and manage labour expenditure.
- Asset Utilisation: Track the condition, availability and use of machinery, fleet vehicles and operational equipment, taking action to reduce interruptions and idle time.
- Capacity Assessment: Regularly review staffing and asset requirements, presenting justified recommendations where additional resources or investment may be needed.
- Commercial Support: Contribute operational expertise to quotations, tenders and project costings, helping the Company submit viable and accurately priced proposals.
- Business Alignment: Coordinate with the senior leadership team to ensure operational priorities support the Company’s wider commercial direction and expansion plans.
- Management Systems: Carry out activities in accordance with the Business’s established frameworks covering service quality, environmental responsibility and occupational health and safety.
- Financial Oversight: Examine operating expenditure, productivity measures, project status and other management information to identify risks and areas requiring corrective action.
- Budgetary Control: Compare operational forecasts and departmental budgets against financial expectations, introducing practical measures to strengthen margins and performance.
- Client Relationships: Act as the senior operational contact for customers, handling concerns constructively and ensuring that agreed standards and delivery schedules are achieved.
- People Leadership: Build a cooperative and accountable workplace in which employees are supported, treated fairly and encouraged to improve operational practices.
- Employee Development: Introduce learning and development initiatives that strengthen technical competence, leadership potential and overall team effectiveness.
- Facility Commissioning: Support the design, preparation and launch of the Company’s planned treatment facility, working with technical, environmental and regulatory specialists to establish operational preparedness.
- Operational Procedures: Help formulate working instructions, process flows, contingency arrangements and incident-response measures for the new site.
- Supplier and Equipment Readiness: Participate in the evaluation of contractors, purchasing activities and checks to confirm that equipment is suitable and ready for use.
- Evolving Responsibilities: Undertake other relevant duties as the Business develops and its operational priorities change.
Qualifications, Skills and Attributes
- Education: A relevant academic or professional qualification in operations, environmental management, engineering, business administration or a related discipline would be advantageous.
- Experience: At least 5 years of relevant experience within operational leadership or a comparable management position is required. Previous exposure to environmental services, waste operations or an industrial setting would be particularly valuable.
- Project Coordination: A strong record of coordinating projects, deploying personnel and maintaining effective oversight of operational activities is essential.
- Sector Knowledge: A sound understanding of waste-handling practices, environmental responsibilities and the compliance expectations applicable to regulated operations is preferred.
- Language Skills: Excellent command of English is required to succeed in this role. The ability to communicate in Maltese would be an asset.
- Communication Skills: Clear and confident communication is required to explain operational priorities, report performance and maintain productive dialogue with customers, colleagues and external parties.
- Interpersonal Skills: The ability to form credible professional relationships and engage with clients in a constructive, solution-focused manner is essential.
- Leadership: Demonstrated ability to direct, motivate and develop teams comprising employees from different technical and professional backgrounds.
- Strategic Thinking: Capable of translating broader organisational goals into measurable activities, resource plans and operational priorities.
- Financial Acumen: Comfortable reviewing expenditure, budgets, forecasts and performance indicators to support sound commercial decisions.
- Technical Skills: Familiarity with occupational safety requirements, environmental regulation and relevant European legislative frameworks is important.
- Regulatory Liaison: Experience engaging with competent authorities, maintaining compliant documentation and preparing operations for inspections or audits would be beneficial.
- Organisation: Strong planning and prioritisation abilities, with the capacity to coordinate people, assets, client requirements and concurrent projects.
- Self-Motivated: A forward-looking and responsible approach, accompanied by a genuine commitment to improvement, innovation and environmentally conscious operations.
