Role Overview
Heroix is collaborating with our Client in the professional and community services sector to recruit a Group Financial Controller. Reporting to the Managing Director, the successful candidate will direct the finance function across several group entities, strengthen financial governance and provide commercially relevant information to support continued expansion. This role combines strategic financial leadership with direct involvement in accounting activities and the development of a capable internal finance team.
Key Responsibilities
- Financial Operations: Direct the accounting function across the Group, covering general ledger activities, receivables, payables, payroll supervision, billing processes and fixed-asset records.
- Financial Close: Manage monthly and annual closing procedures, ensuring that balances are supported, reconciliations are complete and financial information is produced accurately within the required deadlines.
- Cash and Treasury Management: Monitor liquidity across the Business, prepare forward-looking cash projections and oversee banking activities and relationships.
- Compliance and Statutory Reporting: Ensure that tax submissions, VAT returns, corporate filings and other financial obligations are completed correctly and on time in accordance with Maltese legislation, IFRS and GAPSME requirements.
- Team Leadership: Review the existing finance structure, guide current team members and introduce clear responsibilities, reporting lines and effective ways of working.
- Recruitment and Development: Identify additional staffing requirements as the Group expands and, where necessary, recruit, onboard and coach finance professionals at different levels of experience.
- Performance Management: Define measurable objectives for the department, evaluate individual and team performance, and encourage ownership, professional learning and stronger working practices.
- Management Information: Produce monthly financial packs, business-unit profitability reports, performance comparisons and meaningful commentary for the Managing Director and other senior stakeholders.
- Planning and Forecasting: Coordinate the annual budgeting cycle, maintain regularly updated forecasts and create financial models to assess planned projects, investments and expansion opportunities.
- Commercial Analysis: Examine expenditure relating to employees, distribution, premises, purchasing and other operational areas to highlight savings, improve margins and strengthen working capital.
- Business Partnership: Advise senior leadership on financial performance, resource allocation, commercial risks and the financial implications of proposed business decisions.
- Audit Coordination: Manage the year-end audit process, prepare the required information and work closely with external auditors to support an efficient and satisfactory conclusion.
- Controls and Process Improvement: Introduce practical safeguards, standardise procedures and improve financial systems to support accuracy, accountability and scalable operations across all entities.
- Performance Deliverables: Ensure monthly reporting is completed within ten working days of period-end, statutory obligations are met without penalties and agreed finance-team appointments are completed within established timescales.
Qualifications, Skills and Attributes
- Education: A fully completed ACCA qualification or an equivalent recognised tertiary qualification in Accountancy or Finance is required.
- Experience: At least 5 years of progressive experience in accounting and financial management is necessary. Exposure to a group structure involving several legal entities, particularly within a service-led environment, would be advantageous.
- Language Skills: Excellent command of English is required to succeed in this role. The ability to communicate in Maltese would be an asset.
- Leadership Skills: The ability to guide, develop and hold finance employees accountable, together with either demonstrated management experience or clear readiness to assume responsibility for a growing department.
- Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal abilities, with the confidence to explain financial results, risks and recommendations clearly to both finance and non-finance stakeholders.
- Interpersonal Skills: A cooperative and credible approach that supports productive relationships with senior leaders, employees, banks, auditors, advisers and regulatory contacts.
- Technical Skills: Advanced knowledge of accounting and ERP platforms, Excel, financial modelling and the Maltese rules governing taxation, VAT, payroll and statutory reporting.
- Financial Reporting: Sound working knowledge of IFRS and GAPSME, supported by the ability to prepare accurate accounts for several entities and translate results into useful commercial insight.
- Organisation: Excellent planning and prioritisation abilities, with the capacity to coordinate reporting deadlines, compliance requirements, team workloads and operational finance activities simultaneously.
- Attention to Detail: A thorough and disciplined approach to financial records, reporting, controls and regulatory obligations.
- Self-Motivated: A proactive and adaptable professional who is comfortable taking ownership, introducing improvements and remaining directly involved in operational work when required.
- Commercial Awareness: The ability to evaluate profitability, expenditure, cash requirements and business proposals in the context of the Group’s wider objectives.
- Problem-Solving: A practical and analytical mindset, with the judgement to identify weaknesses, determine their underlying causes and implement sustainable solutions in a changing business environment.
