Role Overview
Heroix is collaborating with our Client to recruit a Head of Accounting who will direct the accounting department within a corporate services environment. Reporting to the Head of Business Operations, the selected professional will lead the team, safeguard the quality of financial information, strengthen departmental practices and ensure that services are delivered in accordance with applicable accounting, taxation and statutory obligations.
The position also carries responsibility for cultivating lasting client relationships, coordinating with other specialist departments and supporting the continued development of the Business’s service offering.
Key Responsibilities
- Departmental Leadership: Guide and support a team of Accounts Managers, Senior Accounting Officers and Accounting Officers, creating a productive environment built around accountability, cooperation and consistently high standards.
- Performance and Development: Evaluate team members’ progress, offer practical guidance and establish suitable learning opportunities that strengthen individual capability and departmental performance.
- Workload Coordination: Plan assignments and distribute resources effectively across the department, ensuring that internal commitments and client deliverables are completed within the required timeframes.
- Financial Statement Supervision: Direct the complete financial reporting cycle for a varied portfolio, checking that accounts and supporting reconciliations are reliable, properly prepared and issued when required.
- Audit Management: Coordinate external audit engagements on behalf of clients, acting as the principal contact for auditors and facilitating the efficient provision of information and documentation.
- Payroll and VAT Administration: Maintain senior oversight of payroll services, VAT obligations and associated regulatory submissions whenever these form part of a client engagement.
- Accounting Compliance: Confirm that all work produced by the department meets IFRS, GAAP, GAPSME, Maltese taxation rules and relevant filing obligations.
- Governance and Controls: Establish and enhance internal procedures that protect financial integrity, reduce exposure to error and promote dependable service standards.
- Process Improvement: Review departmental workflows and introduce practical changes that improve productivity, consistency and the accuracy of accounting outputs.
- Client Advisory: Serve as a senior contact for clients, understand their commercial circumstances and provide financial guidance suited to their particular requirements.
- Service Development: Recognise opportunities to broaden existing client engagements by introducing additional services available across the Business.
- Cross-Departmental Cooperation: Coordinate with tax, company secretarial, audit and legal professionals to provide clients with a joined-up and responsive service.
- Strategic Contribution: Contribute to forward-looking financial planning and wider business initiatives affecting both the organisation and its client portfolio.
- Technology and Innovation: Assess the effectiveness of accounting platforms and champion appropriate digital improvements that enhance the department’s capabilities.
- Professional Awareness: Keep abreast of changes to financial reporting frameworks, taxation legislation, regulatory expectations and developments affecting the corporate services sector.
- Professional Standing: Retain all relevant warrants and professional memberships by meeting the Continuing Professional Development obligations applicable in Malta.
Qualifications, Skills and Attributes
- Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, full ACCA membership or another recognised professional accounting qualification is required.
- Professional Credentials: The selected candidate must hold and maintain any professional warrant or membership needed to perform the position in Malta.
- Experience: Considerable experience at senior accounting level is essential, together with demonstrated success in managing people within a corporate services provider or broader professional services setting.
- Leadership: A strong ability to inspire, organise and develop accounting professionals while building a cohesive, responsible and results-focused department.
- Accounting Knowledge: Advanced understanding of IFRS, GAAP, GAPSME, taxation compliance and statutory financial reporting requirements.
- Language Skills: Excellent command of English is required to succeed in this role. The ability to communicate in Maltese would be an asset.
- Communication Skills: The ability to explain detailed financial matters clearly and confidently to clients, colleagues and stakeholders without an accounting background.
- Interpersonal Skills: A relationship-focused approach, with the maturity and credibility needed to earn trust and work effectively across different professional disciplines.
- Technical Skills: Strong competence in reviewing complex financial information, recognising emerging patterns, evaluating exposure and recommending commercially appropriate action.
- Commercial Awareness: The capacity to understand client priorities, identify additional service needs and contribute meaningfully to client retention and business growth.
- Organisation: Excellent planning and prioritisation abilities, with the discipline to coordinate competing assignments and meet demanding reporting schedules.
