Role Overview
The Head of Project Design will be responsible for planning, managing, and leading innovative design strategies for various urban public realm projects. The ideal candidate will be recognised for their creative vision and ability to address local urban design challenges, overseeing a team that develops comprehensive architectural, urban, and landscaping design concepts.
Key Responsibilities
- Innovative Design Coordination: Lead and coordinate innovative design strategies across a diverse array of infrastructure and public space projects.
- Project Concept Management: Oversee the development of architectural, urban, and landscaping design concepts to serve as a foundation for urban project briefs.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Work closely with public and private stakeholders to achieve integrated planning and optimal design outcomes.
- Planning Initiatives Support: Assist management with planning initiatives by providing analysis reports and recommendations through urban design research.
- Technical Guidance: Provide technical oversight to other units within the Agency, especially during project tendering and implementation phases.
- Review and Evaluation: Direct the review of architectural and urban design proposals submitted by various stakeholders, ensuring they meet established standards.
- Team Leadership: Foster a culture of teamwork, innovation, and continuous improvement while guiding staff in decision-making, negotiation, and conflict resolution.
- Risk Management: Identify and manage potential risks and constraints related to the operational aspects of design concepts.
- Policy and Strategy Development: Formulate and articulate policies and strategies through detailed master planning development.
- Team Oversight: Ensure that architecture, urban, and landscaping design teams adhere to quality, budget, and timeline deliverables.
- Additional Duties: Perform other related tasks as assigned by senior management.
Qualifications, Skills, and Attributes
- Experience: Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in infrastructural or urban design projects, along with a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture or Civil Engineering (MQF Level 6) and Warranted status.
- Language Skills: Excellent command of English is required to succeed in this role. The ability to communicate in Maltese would be an asset.
- Communication Skills: Strong verbal, written, and presentation skills to convey design solutions effectively in a collaborative environment.
- Interpersonal Skills: Demonstrated ability to negotiate and resolve conflicts among stakeholders, including the public and various government levels.
- Technical Skills: Proficient in computer-aided design tools such as SketchUp, Rhino, AutoCAD, and Adobe Photoshop.
- Organisation: Exceptional organisational skills with the ability to evaluate work programmes and realign assignments as necessary.
- Self-Motivated: A proactive approach to managing responsibilities and driving projects forward.
- Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and creative skills to develop unique solutions to complex design challenges.

- Working Hours: Monday to Friday, averaging 8 hours per day. Flexible remote/hybrid work is offered once a week after 3 months of employment, subject to management approval.
