Job Overview:

The Health and Safety Coordinator is responsible for ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of employees, contractors, customers, and visitors across all retail locations

within the company. The coordinator will develop, implement, and monitor safety policies and procedures to comply with regulatory requirements, company standards, and industry best practices. 

This role involves conducting regular safety inspections, training employees on safety protocols, and collaborating with management to maintain a safe retail environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure all retail locations comply with local safety regulations, including OSHA (Occupational Health and Safety Act).
  • Conduct inspections to identify hazards and assess risks in stores and warehouses. 
  • Ensure that recommendations and areas of improvement that are highlighted during 3rd party Risk assessments are followed up and actioned with undue delay.
  • Develop and maintain safety documentation, including accident reports, risk assessments, and safety protocols.
  • Ensure all employees are informed and up-to-date on health and safety regulations and standards.
  • Ensure that regular training to retail staff on safety procedures, emergency response plans, and first-aid practices is given.
  • Develop safety training materials and programs tailored to different roles within the retail environment (e.g., cashiers, stock associates, managers).
  • Organize refresher courses and workshops to keep employees aware of safety practices and equipment usage. 
  • Investigate workplace incidents, accidents, and near misses to determine causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Report incidents to the appropriate authorities, as required, and assist with workers' compensation claims.
  • Maintain accurate records of accidents, incidents, and injuries, and generate reports for management.
  • Ensure appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is provided and used by employees where necessary, and adequate first-aid resources.
  • Provide safety performance reports and recommendations to senior management regularly. 
  • Assist with the development of company-wide health and safety initiatives and participate in safety committee meetings.

Qualifications

  • Preferably qualified or in process of obtaining a qualification in Health and Safety.  
  • 2-3 years of experience in a health and safety role, preferably in a retail or service-oriented environment.
  • Experience in conducting safety audits. 
  • First-aid and CPR certification required.
  • Additional safety certifications (e.g., NEBOSH, safety management training) a plus.

Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of health and safety regulations and best practices.
  • Ability to identify hazards and implement corrective measures.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to conduct safety training and engage employees in safety practices.
  • Proficient with safety software and MS Office Suite.
