About This Job

Overview  

Join a workshop team servicing heavy commercial vehicles and plant equipment. You will diagnose, repair, and maintain trucks, trailers, and specialized machinery to ensure safe, reliable operation and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

- Diagnostics & Repair: Inspect, diagnose and repair engines, transmissions, drivetrains, braking systems, suspensions, steering, and electrical systems on heavy vehicles.

- Preventive Maintenance: Perform scheduled servicing, oil changes, greasing, fluid checks, and adjustments; prepare and execute maintenance plans to minimise downtime.

- Component Overhaul & Replacement: Remove, rebuild and install major components (engines, gearboxes, differentials, axles) and replace worn parts using appropriate tools and equipment.

- Electrical & Electronic Systems: Troubleshoot and repair vehicle electrical systems, ABS/ESC, sensors, ECUs and wiring harnesses; use diagnostic tools and software.

- Safety & Compliance: Ensure all work meets safety standards and legal requirements; complete inspections and documentation for roadworthiness and fleet compliance.

- Workshop Documentation: Maintain accurate job cards, parts lists, service records and warranty documentation; report on completed jobs and outstanding issues.

- Tools & Equipment Management: Use, maintain and calibrate hand tools, power tools and diagnostic equipment; request and manage spare parts inventory as needed.

- Collaboration & Communication: Liaise with drivers, fleet managers and suppliers to prioritise work, explain repairs, provide cost estimates and recommend improvements.

- Mentoring: Coach and support junior technicians when required; promote best practices and continuous improvement in workshop processes.

Skills & Qualifications

- Proven experience as a heavy vehicle mechanic or similar role (mid-senior level) servicing trucks, trailers and heavy plant.

- Relevant vocational qualification or apprenticeship in heavy vehicle mechanics, automotive engineering or equivalent.

- Strong mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems knowledge; competent with diesel engines and transmissions.

- Proficient with vehicle diagnostic tools, fault code readers and workshop software.

- Solid understanding of vehicle electrical/electronic systems and ability to interpret wiring diagrams.

- Ability to read technical manuals, service bulletins and parts diagrams.

- Good problem-solving skills, attention to detail and ability to work to deadlines.

- Physically fit and able to handle manual tasks, lifting and working in confined spaces.

- Valid driving licence suitable for heavy vehicles preferred.

- Professional working proficiency in English; basic conversational Maltese advantageous.

- Commitment to health, safety and environmental regulations; clean work record and reliable attendance.
