Roles & Responsibilities:

The Pre-Operative Nurse is responsible for delivering safe, high- quality and compassionate nursing care. The role involves carrying out patient assessments, investigations and documentation, and must ensure that patients are optimally prepared for their procedure or surgery.

  • Carry out pre-operative assessments for patients attending the clinic, in line with established hospital policies and procedures.
  • Perform clinical observations and clerking as required.
  • Taking blood of pre-operative patients, as per requirements.
  •  Performing pre-operative ECGs.
  • Providing patients with the required pre-operative information- fasting guidelines, medication guidance and basic post-operative care
  • Liaising with planned surgery anaesthetists and surgeons, as and when required.
  • Liaising with colleagues to ensure that the pre-operative clinic runs a smooth and effective process.
  • Completing and saving all required documentation electronically, using the hospital’s digital systems..
  • Acting as an exemplary role model who leads by example in regard to professional attitudes, conduct, and appearance and with regard to the Hospital Service Standards.
  • Actively participating in the development of unit projects, encouraging innovation and creativity
  • Ensuring that any complaints are dealt with professionally, in a timely manner and according to Hospital policy.
  • Any other tasks required for the Pre-Operative Clinic to run smoothly.
  • Maintaining and enhancing own knowledge through mandatory training, continuing education, training and research activities.
  • Being competent in resuscitation skills, including defibrillation and basic airway management.
  • Using the highest level of interpersonal communication skills to break down barriers and develop interprofessional collaborative working relationships with staff hospital-wide.
  • Holding regular meetings with the Head of Nursing to develop a strategy which addresses identified areas for improvement and acting as a change agent while implementing the necessary changes.
  •  Attend team meetings to addresses identified areas for improvement, discuss ideas for change and possible ways for implementation.
  • Participate in ongoing education to maintain and enhance clinical competence.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of current evidence-based practice relevant to pre-operative nursing.
  • Contribute to orientation and support to new team members, promoting a positive learning environment.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively to patients, relatives and all members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Handle all patients queries and concerns and escalating when appropriate.
  • Communicate effectively to other team members to ensure patient continuity of care.
  • Build a professional relationship with surgeons and anaesthetist.

Requirements:

  • Must be graduated in Nursing and possess current licensure with the Malta Council for Nurses and Midwives.
  • Must communicate effectively with patients, relatives, colleagues and specialists.
  • Must possess excellent observation and critical skills.
  • Must be assertive and be able to make autonomous and effective decisions. 
  • Must be organised.
  • Must have experience in surgical / acute nursing care and/ or anaesthesia.
  • Must be organised, proactive and able to work effectively independently.
  • Must have a high level of computer literacy and digital competence.
  • Must be competent in venepuncture and ECG recording.
