General Scope and Purpose of Position

Psychology assistants shall contribute towards the formation of behavior goals and interventions following internal approaches and use various techniques, including modelling, to support and educate staff in preventing the escalation of undesirable behavior, supporting parents, and contributing towards professional reports on ShowProgress which need to be generated regularly.

Main duties & responsibilities

  • Assist individuals exhibiting a variety of difficulties (e.g. autism, challenging behaviour, etc).
  • Take out observations, set behavior goals and implement external psychological reports and IEP reports as foundation of behavioral goals.
  • Offer recommendations and hands-on intervention based on internal approaches, monitor progress and collaborate with professionals involved (external psychologists, school/ LSEs and parents).
  • Create session plans and take out PSED related activities with clients to target the following:
    • Understanding own emotions, developing self-regulation, making relationships and friendships.
    • Understanding community norms such as personal space and boundaries.
    • Learning the difference between public and private behavior.
  • Support the groups ensuring they have the correct resources and knowledge to follow our approaches.
  • Work in collaboration with other programmes and services. This may include but not limited to: 
    • Supervision of students/volunteers/interns; provision of training/workshops; 
    • In-service training to new staff members; attending various meetings including team;
    • Departmental, operational and organisational ones;
    • Coordination of the psychology service in accordance to contractual obligations.
  • Hold office hours to be used for meetings with the different groups to discuss clients.
  • Document meetings, conversations, and observations that take place regarding the approaches.
  • Provide support to staff in the classrooms as needed.
  • Ensure that psychology services use research-based practice and are providing the highest possible standards to the programmes and the clients within.
  • Establish robust communication networks with clients, carers & other health workers & agencies.
  • Be flexible and open to change as may be required from day-to-day.

Role Requirements

The ideal candidate should possess the following:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Honours) qualification (equivalent to a minimum of MQF Level 6) in Psychology;
  • A minimum of 1-year post graduation experience, ideally within the disability field (especially ASD, challenging behavior etc.);
  • Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team;
  • Highly proficient in English language (both spoken & written).

Prior to being recruited and throughout the duration of employment, the selected candidates need to satisfy the requirements of the Protection of Minors Act (POMA) together with those of immunization.
