Deep Sewer

Overall Purpose of Position

Provides the necessary assistance to operate and maintain the Wastewater Network on a daily basis, including sewer galleries and pumping stations.

Main Accountabilities & Responsibilities

The selected candidate will be expected to: 

· To constantly strive to improve the quality of work performed in the Region by or on behalf of the Corporation. 

· To have the most interest and pride in their work and are conscious of work practices and ethics. 

· To observe and abide by all health and safety requirements. 

· To maintain a constant positive relationship with customers and third parties. 

· To relate and liaise with Team Leader relevant to the work. 

· To safeguard and protect the interests and assets of the Corporation. 

· To participate actively in training courses under the direction of the WSC. 

· To make the most efficient use of resources to achieve the above. 

· To assist in the activities so as to meet the established objectives and targets of the Wastewater Network, as directed by Team Leader. 

· To operate and maintain the area of activities within the Wastewater Network assigned to his / her responsibility. 

· To become thoroughly familiar with the Wastewater Network in general and specially with the activities assigned to his responsibility. 

· To report to the Team Leader or any such officer as designated by the Corporation, on all matters concerning the tasks assigned to his responsibility. 

· To ensure that they adhere to the relevant Health and Safety rules, including proper upkeeping of Health and Safety Equipment. 

· To deputise for the Team Leader or any such officer as designated by the Corporation in their absence from work as directed by his superiors. 

· To actively participate and assist in the work as and when necessary. · To drive a vehicle provided by the Corporation as and when necessary

· To maintain such vehicles, clean and in good working order. 

· To undergo and/or support training courses at the WSC that the Corporation deems necessary for the optimum performance in the grade. 

· To implement sewer preventive maintenance and cleaning operations on a regular and systematic basis, as instructed by Team Leader and/or Operations Manager. 

· To respond to, and resolve efficiently, any cases of sewer blockages, damages, outflows and inflows into premises, as necessary. 

· To ensure that all health and safety measures are abided by at all times. 

· To utilise technological systems, such as CCTV, to carry out detailed studies of the sewer network, as required. 

· To utilise heavy plant machinery, such as jetting-suction bowsers, for the maintenance of the sewer network. 

· Participate in and contribute to cross-functional teams as required, consult with relevant departments, as necessary, and provide training as may be required; 

· Co-ordinate with the Quality Unit in obtaining and maintaining certifications and accreditations of the Corporation and participate in internal and external audits, and peer reviews; 

· Carry out effectively any other duties and responsibilities and undertake other assignments as reasonably directed by the Management.

Working Conditions

· Expected to be in, and maintain, a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service;

· Expected to work flexible hours in order to meet accountabilities and attend to work after office hours, as may be required;

· Abide by rules and regulations issued by WSC;

· Consult with other sections as may be required;

· Expected to maintain oneself abreast with best practices relevant to the post and attend any training which may be provided.

· The nature of this position requires the employee to be physically present during working hours as per operational exigencies.

Qualifications and Experience

By the closing time and date of this call for applications, applicants must: 

i. Be in possession of a recognized MQF Level 4 related to the respective job description OR; 

ii. Be in possession of MQF Level 3 and one (1) years’ experience related to the job description OR; 

iii. Three (3) years experience related to the job description. 

iv. Preferably candidates shall be in possession of Confined Space Certification, H2S awareness certification, Industrial Breathing Apparatus Certification. If not in possession of such courses s/he is to obtain such course in the shortest time possible in conjunction with the Training Department. 

v. Prior starting works with the Deep Sewer Team, s/he is required to obtain full immunisation as requested by WSC within 3 weeks. 

vi. Applicant must be in possession of a valid driving license B. Candidates with License C1 and CPC will be preferred. Successful candidates will be asked to obtain licence C1 and CPC during the probation period. 

vii. Candidates shall present a clean police conduct, not older than six (6) months from the date of application to the Board Members during the interview. 

viii. Chosen applicants will be required to obtain a qualification certificate in the Wastewater Network Course organized by WSC during the probation period.

The appointment is subject to a trial/probationary period of six (6) months during which time Appointees (i) will retain their substantive appointments, and (ii) need invariably undergo and pass through a specialized certification course to be organized by the Corporation as per exigencies. Failure to get certified as herein mentioned will automatically render the incumbent as having failed the trial/probationary and they shall return to their substantive grade upon notice issued by the Corporation to that effect.
