Junior Structural Engineer

Title: Junior Structural Engineer

Reports to: Head of Architecture and Civil Engineer/ Structural Engineer or designated delegate

Summary:

The Junior Structural Engineer will provide professional assistance in architectural and structural Engineering planning, programming, design process and construction administration of projects. The Junior structural engineer may be responsible for assisting on multiple projects at the same time.

Scope of work and responsibilities:

• Carry out Existing site and building surveys, condition reports, etc.;

• Assist in assessing existing buildings, perform surveys and condition reports. Recommend any testing required to determine the actual condition of the building structure and recommend and

remedial works required. The buildings may have different construction materials and methodologies.

• Assist in designing solutions to structural issues in existing buildings, ensuring that the most efficient and effective materials and methodologies are employed.

• Assist with various pre-design services which may include preparing feasibility studies, site analysis, develop client’s brief, prepare design requirements and criteria;

• Working with Architects and Engineers in preparation of architectural designs, technical details, and construction drawings;

• Assist in the preparation of estimate cost reports;

• Assist in the preparation of tender documents to include scope of work descriptions, specifications, drawings, and bill of quantities;

• Work in close collaboration with the other FMS projects team; including Engineers, Architects, project managers, design technicians, quantity surveyors and site coordinators. Coordinate structural, electrical and mechanical designs and determine conflicts in design;

• Completing detailed planning of the projects;

• Assist in the evaluation of tenders and designs, specifications and submittal approvals of the requested materials and works. Analyse buildings/properties codes, by-laws, space and site requirements, and other technical documents and reports to determine their compliance;

• Agreement enforcement by monitoring the installation of the contract works to ensure compliance with the contractual programme, drawings, specifications and the relevant specifications and bringing any matters of concern to the attention of the FMS;

• Taking part in commissioning processes of completed project, and report on their state to the Project Leader with recommend necessary actions;

• Reviewing and commenting on contractor’s/consultant’s progress reports;

• Maintaining daily, weekly and monthly site diaries as appropriate and keeping the Project Leader/ Head of Architecture informed on the progress of the works and any problems or issues that may affect the quality, cost or completion programme;

• Attending meetings together with Architects with the contractor/designer and represent the FMS when requested;

• Drafting and keeping track of meeting minutes

• Reviewing the in-house design and contractor’s design and construction submittals as necessary and advising the Project Leader on any matters that would prevent the Project Leader giving the contractor consent to proceed with the works;

• Provide all necessary assistance to the FMS Projects Office in the procurement of works, goods or services and the preparation of reports, works programmes and budgets and cash flows;

• Provide assistance in the assessment of the value of contract variations and the issuing of interim payment certificates;

• Liaising as necessary with the other members of the Client’s project management team to support the overall project cost and time objectives set for the MFH Capital Projects;

• Contribute to the management of projects from design stage through to completion and handing over to Client;

• Assist in quality control of the Structural Engineering/Architectural Services aspects of the Projects and any other such building;

• Check the Certificates of Payments for Works carried out by the Contractors and measured by the Quantity Surveyor;

• Assess change orders (variations);

• Identify potential delays and recommended corrective actions;

• Ensure that Client requirements are clearly identified and met;

• Provide all necessary assistance to the Project Leader, in the procurement of the works, goods or services and the preparation of reports, works programmes and budgets and cash flows;

• Act as Project Leader for any project assigned, as necessary;

• Other responsibilities related to services offered by a professional structural Engineer and meet any necessary additional requirements commensurate with his/her professional qualifications and experience.

Qualifications and Experience

Qualifications:

• A recognized and accredited Bachelor’s Degree at MQF Level 6 or higher in Structural Engineering or equivalent;

AND

• A minimum of one year of professional experience working in the field of Structural Engineering;

• Knowledge of local building laws, regulations, construction practices and Planning Authority procedures and policies.

Other pre-requisites

• AutoCAD proficient;

• Proficient in the English language, both written and verbally.

• Experience in writing of works and materials specifications relating civil and finishing works will be considered as an asset;

• Work experience in management of construction projects will be considered an asset;

• Must be have a learning attitude with the ambition to eventually become a Warranted professional in Malta.

Type of Contract and Salary Range:

Contract Type: Indefinite contract with 12 months probationary period

Salary: An attractive salary package including allowances is being offered with this position
