About This Job

About This Job

We are building the technology that powers a forty-year-old insurance business from the platform our team uses every day to the applications our customers rely on. We are looking for an a Software Developer to join our team and help us build, improve, and maintain these systems to a high standard.

Laferla has been arranging insurance for people and businesses in Malta since 1984. Today we write our own software: the platform our underwriters and claims handlers work in, the app our customers use, and the integrations that keep it all connected to our core systems. It is a small engineering team with a short decision chain – you will work closely with our Head of IT and see your work used across the business.

WHAT YOU WOULD WORK ON

· Features end to end – from database schema to interface – with real input into how they are designed, not just how they are coded.

· Building and improving the integrations between our platform, our customer app and our core systems.

· Code quality across the team: reviews, automated testing, and the standards we all work to.

· Helping newer developers find their feet through code reviews and pairing.

· Making sure what you ship to production is tested, reviewed and safe to release.

THE WORK, HONESTLY

· Modern stack. TypeScript and React on the front end, Node.js and PostgreSQL behind it, mobile in React Native, deployed continuously.

· Established systems. Like any business that has been around for forty years, some of what we run was built long before the current team. Part of the job is working carefully with code you did not write.

· A regulated business. What you build has to be auditable, and some of what we handle is health data. That shapes the engineering rather than slowing it down.

· Real users, quickly. Small company, short feedback loop. What you ship on Tuesday is being used on Wednesday.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

· Three years or more building software professionally – though we care more about judgement and the quality of your work than about the number.

· Strong in at least one of C#, Python, JavaScript or TypeScript.

· Comfortable across the stack: you can take a feature from database schema to interface, asking for guidance when it is genuinely needed.

· Solid SQL, REST APIs and Git, and an understanding of how your code reaches production.

· You have worked in an existing codebase and improved it without breaking it.

· You can explain a technical decision clearly to someone who does not write code.

Useful, but not essential

· Financial services, insurance or another regulated industry.

· Experience with Node.js, PostgreSQL or React Native specifically.

· Cloud platforms, CI/CD pipelines or infrastructure as code.

· Accessibility, or building for people who are not like you.

· Exposure to legacy or 4GL platforms (for example Dataflex).

· Maltese, though English is the working language.

WHAT WE OFFER

· Competitive Salary, reviewed annually.

· Health insurance and life cover.

· Flexible work hours.

· Professional Development
