About This Job

Our client, one of Malta’s leading full-service law firm, is seeking to recruit an experienced practitioner to join its Financial Services Department.

This is a strategic hire aimed at strengthening and further expanding the firm’s Fintech and Financial Regulatory offering. We are looking for a highly motivated practitioner with strong technical expertise and a genuine interest in emerging technologies, financial innovation, and the evolving regulatory landscape including the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) and related EU frameworks.

This role is suitable for a senior practitioner seeking to take a leadership role in a growing fintech and regulatory practice.

Responsibilities:

The selected candidate will have a key role in developing, leading, and growing the firm’s Fintech practice, including responsibility for:

  • Fintech, Digital Assets & Emerging Technologies

Advising on legal and regulatory matters relating to:

  • MiCA

  • Licensing and registration of crypto-asset service providers (CASPs)

  • Issuance, offering, or admission to trading of crypto-assets

  • Stablecoins and e-money tokens

  • Digital wallets, exchanges, tokenisation, and blockchain infrastructures

  • Structuring and launching fintech and digital asset projects within the EU regulatory framework.

Financial Services  Regulation and Supervision

Advising on MFSA licensing, regulatory compliance, prudential requirements, outsourcing arrangements, governance, and ongoing supervisory obligations for:

  • Electronic money institutions (EMIs)

  • Payment service providers (PSPs)

  • Crypto-asset service providers (CASPs)

  • Drafting and reviewing regulatory documentation, manuals, policies, and internal controls.

 Client Engagement & Business Development

  • Acting as a primary point of contact for clients operating in fintech, crypto or virtual assets, and related regulated financial services.

  • Supporting and growing the firm’s fintech client base.

  • Participating in conferences, regulatory consultations, and industry initiatives in the related areas.

  • Contributing to thought leadership (articles, seminars, webinars, guidance notes) in the related areas.

Requirements:

  • Qualified lawyer or other senior practitioner with experience in financial services and fintech.

  • Solid knowledge of Maltese and EU financial services legislation.

  • Familiarity with MiCA, DORA, PSD2–PSD3, EMD, MIFID II, and related frameworks.

  • Experience liaising with regulatory bodies, particularly the MFSA and FIAU.

  • Ability to work autonomously while contributing to a collaborative team.

  • Strong analytical, drafting, and problem?solving skills.

  • Commercial awareness and client?facing confidence.

  • A proactive mindset with an interest in technological and financial innovation.
